Hershey’s Gold Caramelized Crème Peanuts & Pretzels – Released in the winter of 2017, Hershey’s tried to introduce the Hershey’s Gold bar as a new standard candy bar option to be included in its pantheon of candy counter options. They were saying that it wasn’t a limited edition gimmick – Hershey’s Gold was here to stay. Oh, how I hope that remains true. This thing is great – classically great. Great in the way that it seems like it should have been around forever. Great in a way that it’s comfortably reminiscent of a classic chocolate bar, but completely unique. Its not chocolate – but it’s got the texture of chocolate. Its not peanut butter – but the flavor is reminiscent of peanut brittle. It’s not caramel in a way I’ve had it before. Its caramelized crème. What the heck is that? It’s Hershey’s Gold – that’s what it is. Like David Pumpkins, its it’s own thang. Pretzel as a candy bar ingredient isn’t a breakthrough – mainstreamed by the excellent Take 5 candy bar. Still, pretzels are the perfect complement; in texture – adding crunch – and in flavor. Think salted caramel. If anything is unnecessary here, it’s the peanuts. They get a little lost, but add some nice texture and balance the sweetness against some savory. Hershey’s Gold is nearly too sweet for its own good. But ultimately runs a perfect balance of flavors. I may stockpile a gross of these things in case they don’t catch on.
