Pringles Food Truck Flavors
Kickin’ Chicken Taco
Pringles new gimmick line of “Food Truck Flavors” is as good an excuse as any justify unique flavored chips. Pringles doesn’t roll out new flavors with the fanfare of Lays Do Us a Flavor, but they have always been pretty innovative. Pizza flavor is a old Pringles favorite and over the holidays they had Pecan Pie Pringles.
Kickin’ Chicken Taco is not all that innovative. Taco is hardly groundbreaking as a chip flavor. Pringles did a pretty good job with the right amount of taco seasoning and even got a pretty spot-on chicken taste in there while maintaining a flavor that makes sense for a chip.
The more of these reviews I write, tasting chips with a discerning tongue, the more I wonder how true the flavor would be without the power of suggestion? That is to say, in a blind taste test, if I didn’t know it was “Kickin’ Chicken Taco” on the label, would I be as confident that they nailed the flavor? I think I would pick out the taco. But without mouth texture of the namesake food, it might be tough to get exactly.
They don’t taste too much like chicken and that might be a good thing. Getting the flavor too precise might be gross or unsettling. Think about sour cream and onion chips. They are super tasty. But they don’t taste like an actual onion dipped in sour cream. Likewise, BBQ chips are a representation of BBQ sauce, but don’t really taste EXACTLY like BBQ sauce.
When if comes to chips flavors, I think we are better off with an homage than we would be with a facsimile. It should still taste like a chip. Kickin’ Chicken Taco comes just close enough to a chicken taco flavor without being weird.
